Last Week: Nailed it! Windy but cold Saturday and Sunday
Tally So Far: Nailed It! – 15, Close –16, Way Off – 0
In 2013 we had a few more weeks of riding than this year, due to the long winter. Last year my tally was 15, 20 and 2. So, I would say there was a small improvement in the forecast accuracy for 2013 to 2014. I didn’t have any “way offs” and the ratio of “nailed it” to “close” improved by almost 20%
Some of the more difficult things I notice about doing this is predicting thermal winds, especially the NW that develop in Muskegon and Grand Haven and the intensity. Another thing that got me a couple times is predicting the wind when it’s teetering on the edge of S and SSE and being smooth side shore or gusty side off.
Today: Wind is going to pick up out of the SSW this afternoon up to 20 knots+ from Muskegon and north.
Saturday: The south wind is going to continue but it is going to be mixed with ice, sleet and rain throughout the day.
Sunday: The wind is going to remain out of the south, but shift offshore to SE.
Again, just not looking good to get out this weekend with it staying so cold. Even though the air temperature should be in the 40’s Saturday, the wind chill is going to be in the 20’s. Water temperatures are really dropping now too, just barely in the 40’s. The long term forecast is trending on the cold side. Usually I get out over thanksgiving weekend, but probably not this year.
Hopefully we don’t lose too much snow with this rain coming so that we can turn our attention to snowkiting. I’ve seen that some locals have already been able to get out in some of the snowy fields.
We’ll continue to post throughout the winter on different things going on around the lake shore and such as always. I’ll start the weekly forecast up in the spring!
Also, it was great having the surfing videos shared with us this past week so we could post those on here. They were some very quality videos and fun to watch. I hope that more of those can be shared with us in the future, or even good photos or stories!
